Yum Yum Tree Records, a super new label and musicians’ collective launches on Dec 9th at Caravan, 5 Hanley st Marrickville, 7 pm start.

The collective includes members of the Elana Stone Band, BAZ, Zoe & The Buttercups, My Goodness, McGuiness! and The MFW. The short story is we all spent a lot of time hanging out at 5 Wise St, or Yum Yum Tree, a share house where I and a bunch of other musos lived for some time.

Lineup includes the amazing Bellyache Ben And The Steamgrass Boys, who will be launching their new album, The MFW (also launching their album), Luke Escombe, and The Cope St Parade.

Ben Hauptmann self-titled debut

Yum Yum Tree Records are really excited to announce the release of Benjamin Hauptmann’s amazing self-titled record. Last year Ben won the Freedman Fellowship and used the prize money to put a half Sydney half Melbourne SUPER BAND together and made a really great recording.
The band features Benjamin Hauptmann (Guitars), Damian Slingsby (Keyboards), Julian Banks (Sax), Gian Slater (Vocals), Chris Hale (Bass), Zoe Hauptmann(Bass), James Hauptmann (Drums), Evan Mannell (Drums), Arne Hanna (Guitar) & Aaron Flower (Guitar).

IMPERMANCE at 505 and Manly Jazz Festival

Impermanents own resident drummer Paul Derricott will be performing this week at both 505 and Manly Jazz Festival.

The Doig Collective returns to 505 to showcase a set of Doig’s uncompromising original music, to be recorded in the ABC studio the next day. For the second set, the powerhouse frontline will be joined by singer Gen Ingham, exploring “new standards”, expanding on arrangements by the likes of Kristin Berardi, Robert Glasper. Hildegunn Gjedrem, and Gretchen Parlato amongst others.

On Sunday Paul and newly minted impermanent bassist and all round good guy Brendan Clarke will take the Denominators for an outing at Manly Jazz Festival. The denominators push the aesthetic of groove and melody a selfless commitment , a strong sense of pulse is evident with a emphasis on simple melodic content coupled with interesting harmonic movement. Not the new avant-garde the denominators are forging ahead lush ballads, minimal grooves.

Salvation Street Shout play Sydney Fringe Sept 23

Hiya! My new trombone shout project will be playing under the twin auspices of SIMA and the Sydney Fringe Festival on September 23rd at The Sound Lounge, albeit without me. But that’s ok because this project features a plethora of wonderful trombonists!

Be transported to the soulful streets of 1920s Charlotte, North Carolina as Salvation Street Shout revives the Southern tradition of the trombone shout band. Seven trombone players and one jumpin’ drummer will soothe and save you with their harmonic hymns, harking back to the church bands of old. Featuring the music of Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers, this is an experience that will be at once Holy and jivin’.

My concept behind this project is a mix of a few loves: North Carolina shout bands (for a history see berliozhistoricalbrass.org), Sam Cooke’s work with the Soul Stirrers (which is analagous to a vocal shout band; joyous upbeat gospel), and other non-gospel vocal works that transpose well to a brass choir: in particular Brian Wilson’s accapella arrangements for the beach boys, and a few late-19th century tin-pan-alley “coon-songs” which are equally beautiful.

As such our program as it now stands oscillates between a joyous mood with upbeat rhythm, and joyous mood without a discernible beat. There is no go to library for the repertoire I wanted to include, so all the arrangements are mine, or my transcriptions of vocal arrangements. The other part of the genesis is the perfomers: I’ve been getting musicians and in particular trombonists together at my sydney studio (studioimpermanent.wordpress.com) for group masterclasses over the last few years. There’s an instinctive comraderie between instrumentalists of the same ilk, obviously, and I feel each of the trombonists involved has a distinctive voice to offer, both in terms of melodic interpratation and improvisation. I love and respect them all, so I’m really happy to have a project where we can feature them all side by side and highlight their individuality.
